Subject: Composite Applications and Automatic Addition of Icons to the Wor
Feedback Type: Suggestion
Product Area: Composite Applications
Technical Area: Functionality
Platform: Windows XP client
Release: All
Reproducible: Always

Please pardon me for posting this feedback if most of you consider this matter trivial or think I am reaching the wrong conclusions.

According to articles on developerWorks, a composite application in ND8.5 allows developers to combine multiple Lotus Notes applications and provide users with an unified interface. In my parlance, it is called a multi-database application, and we have been building them for years. Much like composite applications, currently, using LotusScript, we can programmatically bind a host of Lotus Notes applications and provide users with a "Navigator". However, when they use the "Navigator" to browse the documents, icons of individual databases storing those documents are automatically added to the workspace.

I was hoping that this feature will be somwhat controllable while designing composite applications using ND8.5. However, sadly, this seems to be not the case. When using a composite application, icons of the individual databases composing the application are added to the workspace, as well, which allows individual users to open those applications outside of the unified interface. In my opinion, this puts a dent on the reasoning behind designing composite applications: 'to boost your organization's productivity by providing the end user with a unified interface in which to conduct their business process' - courtesy Lead Manager composite application article on developerWorks. Of course, an unified interface is availble, but then your workspace is cluttered with icons of all the associated applications, too. Now, in my opinion, you are just confusing the end user as to which application is to use.

Hence, my question to developers at IBM is this: are there any plans of providing we Lotus Notes/Domino developers with an option that gives us the ability to control the addition of application icons to the workspace? An off/on switch at the application level would suffice, in my opinion. This would allow us to designate a "master application" with the add icon property set to true. The add icon property of all ancillary applications can be set to false, thereby preventing them from being automatically added to the workspace.

Thank you!
